A really useful engine…….

Happy new year Folks! Although 2011 is only a few days old, our Type 2 workhorse D5310 is already busy, hauling several works trains on the LR this week. Showing how technology makes communication so quick these days, D5310 is seen today in Col Cooper’s photo waiting patiently near Carrog with a DCE consist including the LR’s 30 tonne self-propelled crane. Note the embankment stablisation work taking place in the background.

Remember D5310 is on tour in the spring – visiting the Wensleydale Railway for their spring diesel gala on 8th-10th April and then operating again the following weekend, 16th & 17th April.

Elsewhere in the Group, plans for our 1960’s weekend on July 30th & 31st are already taking shape nicely and news about our Spring Diesel Day on 26th of March will follow soon – watch this space!

And if you’ve still got Christmas pressie money burning a hole in your threadbare pockets, we’ve still got some of our superb range of merchandise on offer. Have a look here to see what’s on offer – we do mail order!

Cheers

Seasons Greetings!

The Group would like to wish all our supporters a very Merry Christmas and thank you all for your support in 2010. Here’s to another great year of heritage traction at work in the Dee Valley in 2011. What better image to accompany this post than D1566 back in March 2006, seen in the usual blizzard conditions of the ‘Spring’ diesel gala! Photo by Marcus Wheeler.

D5310 on tour in 2011!

We are very pleased to announce that Class 26 No D5310 will be visiting the Wensleydale Railway next April for their Spring diesel gala on April 8th-10th. The loco is also expected to be used on the following weekend.  More details to follow in due course, but we hope the prospect of new track for the Class (unless anyone knows different) will see many folk turn out to bag the haulage.

We would like to thank the Wensleydale Railway and the owner of 25313 for the kind invitation.

LDG Sales Stand on tour

A photo from our travelling sales team of our stand in the main hall at Crewe Heritage centre last weekend, where we were exhibiting as part of the Class 37 50th anniversary event. The 47 cab wasn’t ours to sell, but I’m sure Bryn would have flogged it to someone if he’d been given chance!

Our thanks go to the organisers for inviting us and to Col, Bryn and Dave (who also took the phot) for manning the stand.

47449, back in the days of real trains

A superb photo of our very own 47449 (D1566), kindly provided by Adrian Butterworth. The photo is from the halcyon days of 1988 where British-built locos were common place and shows our 47 hustling a southbound freight that looks very much like a speedlink grain train through Dawlish Warren.  Note the loco is sporting a very shiny looking NRN aerial on the cab roof, which has presumably not long been fitted. The date is 16th of July 1988 – good times!

Thanks to Adrian for allowing us to reproduce the image and for David Dawson for tracking it down.

Also, check out these links to some other superb images of the loco:

Mid-Week Working Party

Some images from David Dawson of further work taking place on the fleet today. D1556 has received a much-needed wash and polish along with a thorough assessment of the condition of the bodywork in preparation for an overhaul and repaint over the next few months. Radiator repairs will also be continuing soon with the aim of having the loco back in traffic by the middle of next year.

First we see Colin ‘Mr Mop’ Cooper scrubbing away:

And then a view of Llangollen TMD. Or could it be Haymarket in the late 60’s?

6940 is now fully drained down and winterised, including removal of the heat exchanger bung plugs and unfastening of the main engine cooling pipe – both areas that have been subject to frost damage in the last two winters, with the aim of preventing further problems next year.

Great Glyn Growler!

Today’s charter was a success with all 6 trips being completed and lots of happy faces. The GG and LDG would like to say a huge thank you to all those who supported the event.

Below we see 6940 taking a quick breather at Glyn, the charter’s namesake. Thanks to Dave Bramley for the phot.
