D5310 arrived safely at the SVR on Tuesday afternoon. The loco was started and tested shortly after unloading with only a minor issue of an air lock in the oil system to sort – a common problem with 6LDAs when moved by road.

The photo below shows her being unloaded:

Thanks to Scott Lewis for the photo.

D5310 to Visit Severn Valley Railway next week

We’re delighted to announce that D5310 will be making a short visit to the Severn Valley Railway for their 1960’s weekend on May 20-22, the first visit of the Class to the SVR.

On Friday May 20th & Saturday May 21st she will work the 09.20 & 13.20 Kidderminster departures, 11.35 & 15.45 Bridgnorth departures and on Sunday the 22nd the 09.40 & 13.40 Kidderminster departures with 11.55 & 16.05 Bridgnorth departures.

Our thanks go to Scott Travis and the management of the Severn Valley Railway for inviting us. The LDG are very much looking forward to taking D5310 on another short holiday.

The visit has been arranged at very short notice and D5310 will be returning to Llangollen immediately after the event – so get her as close to her birthplace in Smethwick as she’s been since 1958 while you can!

Diesel Running Day Roster

We’re pleased to be able to confirm the traction for our 2011 4 trip running days:

Saturday 16th April. Class 31 5580
Saturday 30th April: Class 26 D5310
Saturday 14th May: Class 26 D5310
Saturday 28th May: Class 31 5580
Sunday 5th June: Class 37 6940 (subject to successful repairs and test)
Saturday 18th June: Class 26 D5310
Saturday 9th July:  Class 26 D5310
Saturday 23rd July: Class 37 6940

We appreciate that these days may not be ideal as they clash with similar traction being in use both of the mainline and other heritage railways, but we have the additional constraint of crew availability passed for specific classes of locomotive to factor in. We hope that repairs to 6940 are complete in time for the 5th of June. In the event of a problem with the roster for any of these days, we will aim to confirm the replacement traction as soon as possible via this site and the usual gen forums.

Many thanks

Tez P

A Brush with Springtime!

Thanks to all those who turned out to support 5580’s four trip running day yesterday, it was a super day in fine weather, as Pete Coole’s cracking photos below shows.

First we see the 31 waiting to cross the steam service at Deeside shows.

And next in the company of a tractor (sadly not the EE ype 3 variety for now) at Glyndyfrdwy

And finally, waiting time with the last train of the day from Carrog.

Fun in the Wensleydale Sun!

The LDG would like to thank both the folk who turned up to support D5310 at the weekend and the Wensleydale Railway for inviting and hosting us. The weekend appears to have been a great success and D5310 performed well apart from a small hiccup on Thursday evening which prevented the loco from starting. Fortunately, this was quickly resolved and the little green Type 2 made the first train out on Friday as planned.

The photo below was taken by Martin Taylor, one of the D5310 Bo-ness restoration crew. In perfect light, the 1958-built Type 2 saunters past Westfield Farm with the 14:35 Leeming Bar to Redmire Wensleydale Diesel Gala service, Friday 8/4/11. Many thanks to Martin for sharing this super image.

D5310 will be out in Wensleydale again this weekend, working the WR Orange Timetable single train diagram, making 3 return trips a day between Leeming Bar and Redmire on both Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th April. Details at: http://www.wensleydalerailway.com/html/ … table.html

This diagram offers 97 miles of haulage per day – excellent value for those who record their totals!

D5310 on tour!

D5310 arrived safely at the Wensleydale Railway on Monday evening and was then unloaded successfully on Tuesday morning. The loco will be checked and tested this afternoon before working the first trip out of Leeming on Friday morning at 09:25. The wandering Type 2 works two trips a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – see the WR website for a full timetable – click here. The photo below shows D5310 at Leeming on Monday evening in the Company of an East Coast racehorse – ‘Deltic’ 55019.

April Mileage Accumulation Days

Traction for our four trip running day on the 16th April will be A1A’s Class 31 5580.
5580 at Carrog, 26th March 1971, sorry 2011. We were in the tea room, avin ‘oops.
Traction for the 30th April will most likely be Class 26 D5310, provided that she has returned from the Wensleydale Railway in time. The Type 2 heads North on Monday 4th and we look forward to seeing a few folk up in the land of yummy crumbly cheese next week.
Driver McRoss arrives at ‘Thurso’ on 26th March 1961.

Repairs to 6940 are expected to take a few more weeks and we do not want to overstretch ourselves or rush the work required.

The format for our running days will be as per the last two years; four trips of relaxed trundling up and down the Dee Valley for the price of a normal return ticket, with top scran on offer at both ends of the line.

Time Table:

diesel steam diesel steam diesel steam diesel
Llangollen 1015 1100 1200 1300 1400 1500 1600

Thanks again to those who turned out to support us at last weekend’s Spring Diesel Day!

A big thank you…..

…….to all who supported us at yesterday’s Spring Diesel Day – both as paying punters and being part of making the day happen.

Initial feedback from the ticket offices showed the event has done well. Our merchandise stand on Llan platform also did brisk trade. Anyone who managed to get away from Bryn without being sold a polo shirt, mug or baseball cap did very well!

We’re obviously very sorry that 6940 was unavailable at such short notice and would like to extend sincere thanks to the Llangollen Railcar Group for helping us out at such short notice with the Class 108 to add to the BR Blue festival.

We had an excellent day with Jon and the A1A roadshow on 5580, what a cracking machine which we’re very glad to have with us for the next two seasons. She sounded rather nice in the tunnel!

The crew who would have been on 6940 spent the day removing the contaminated oil. We’ve got more work to do with this to ensure the contamination has been removed, but initial indications are it shouldn’t be too long before we have her back and running at one of our 2011 running days.

Our next running day is 15th April and with D5310 at Wensleydale, it’s likely 5580 may be doing the honours. We will however confirm this in due course.

In the meantime, here’s a couple of photos that sum up the atmosphere of the day:

6940: Not Available for Spring Diesel Day

The LDG are very, very sorry to announce that Class 37 6940 is highly unlikely to work on the 26th. The oil change was performed this morning and the loco was started and fired up fine. All appeared well and a successful test run to Glyndyfrdwy and back threw up no problems. Unfortunately a further check of the new oil showed immediate and obvious water contamination, so we have had to fail the loco to avoid the risk of any damage to the power unit.

The loco does not appear to have lost any water, so we’re hoping the problem has been caused by some residual water in the oil system resulting from the damaged heat exchanger. However, the system was thought to be free of water and until we’ve had a thorough check over that it’s nothing more serious we will obviously not be wasting another batch of new oil or running the power unit.

We’re extremely disappointed to let Folk down, but hope that the debut of 5580, D5310, the Class 104 DMU and 08195 on brakevan shuttles will still attract a few folk along to the Dee Valley tomorrow.

Our sincere apologies for the disappointment.
